Attending college can be quite expensive for students and their families. Luckily, there are many college scholarships and contests available to help pay for a college education. Students should seek out and apply for scholarships in which they meet the eligibility requirements. Below are a handful of scholarships with November 2016 closing dates. Only brief information about each scholarship is listed. Therefore, students are encouraged to visit the scholarship websites to get further details about eligibility and requirements.

Patriot’s Pen Competition
Sponsor: Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States
Amount: Up to $5,000
Closing Date: November 1, 2016
Description: Competition is open to students in grades 6-8. Applicant must submit an essay on the following theme: “The America I Believe In.”

PlasticPlace Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship Award
Sponsor: PlasticPlace
Amount: $1,500
Closing Date: November 1, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to incoming students for the 2017 semester (high school seniors), who are U.S. citizens. Preference will be given to applicants who are female, or belong to any minority group, including African-American, Asian American, Native American, Hispanic, etc. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to designing and marketing a new product.

Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition
Sponsor: Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States
Amount: Up to $30,000
Closing Date: November 1, 2016
Description: Program is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school, or home study program in the United States, its territories and possessions. Applicant must submit a 3-5 minute essay on this year’s theme; “My Responsibility to America.”

Young Writers Awards
Sponsor: Bennington College
Amount: Up to $500
Closing Date: November 1, 2016
Description: Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades can enter in one of the following categories: poetry (a group of three poems), fiction (a short story or one-act play), or nonfiction (a personal or academic essay). All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teacher.

Maryknoll Student Essay Contest
Sponsor: Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers
Amount: Up to $1,000
Closing Date: November 11, 2016
Description: Contest is open to students enrolled in grades 6-12 for the 2016-2017 school year who are residents of one of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, or a province of Canada (except Quebec). Applicant must submit an essay explaining why it is so important to heed the Pope’s call.

Start Standing Scholarship
Sponsor: Start Standing
Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: November 15, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate students. Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to health and being active.

Toptal STEM Scholarships for Women
Sponsor: Toptal
Amount: $5,000
Closing Date: November 15, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to female students throughout the world who are 13 years of age and interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Youth Noise Scholarship Program
Sponsor: Youth Noise
Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: November 21, 2016
Description: Program is open to students currently enrolled in a high school, college, university, or trade school. The contest will require applicants to create a 2-5 minute video in which the applicant explains how new ideas will shape the world around us, and why education is the key to creating a brighter future.

Education Matters Scholarship
Sponsor: Unigo
Amount: $5,000
Closing Date: November 30, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to students 13 years of age or older who are legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia and are currently enrolled (or will enroll no later than the fall of 2022) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education. Applicant will need to submit a short response to a given prompt.

The Fountain Essay Contest 2016
Sponsor: The Foundation Magazine
Amount: Up to $1,000
Closing Date: November 30, 2016
Description: There is no age limit or a condition to fulfill for entry. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to immigrants.
