LGBTQ Scholarships

If you are a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + community, there are scholarships out there just for you. In addition, many of these scholarships are also open to LGBTQ+ allies.

Kay Longcope Scholarship Award
Sponsor: National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association (NLGJA)
Amount: Up to $3,000
Closing Date: May 29, 2020
Description: Scholarship is open to LGBT individuals of color planning to pursue a career in journalism and are able to demonstrate their passion and commitment to the profession.

Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award
Sponsor: National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association (NLGJA)
Amount: Up to $5,000
Closing Date: May 29, 2020
Description: Scholarships are open to current or incoming undergraduate or graduate students who are enrolled in an accredited journalism or mass communications field. Applicant must also demonstrate an awareness of the issues facing the LGBT community and the importance of fair and accurate news coverage.

Description: Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in a basic law enforcement training program in the United States who identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender.

PFLAG Detroit Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current college students from the Detroit area who have shown a commitment to the GLBT community.

Follansbee-Hansen Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and college freshman from the Sacramento area who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning or intersex.

PFund Scholarships

Description: Scholarship is open to students who identify as LGBTQI and allies who are strongly invested in LGBTQI communities and who live or attend scholastic programs in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin. While applicants do not need to fit the following preferences, the selection committee will look more closely at applicants who fit one or more of the following attributes: indigenous, Black, People of Color; undocumented, first generation, immigrants, and new Americans; Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming people, and LBGTQIA individuals from North Dakota or South Dakota.

Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize

Description: Prize is open to graduate and undergraduate students in acknowledgment of outstanding anthropological work on 1) a lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans* topic, or 2) a critical interrogation of sexualities and genders more broadly defined.

New York Ramblers Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate students who are athletes and self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex person OR a demonstrated and committed ally.

Out to Innovate Scholarship
Sponsor: National Organization of Lesbian and Gay Scientists and Technical Professionals Inc.
Amount: UP to $5,000
Closing Date: June 6, 2020
Description: Scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) programs who are either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an active ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

GAPA Foundation Scholarships
Sponsor: Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) Foundation
Amount: Up to $5,000
Closing Date: June 7, 2020
Description: Scholarships are open to high school seniors and current college students who express activism in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) and/or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities; however, applicants do not need to identify as either to apply. Preference will be given to those who identify as both API and LGBTQ. There is no citizenship requirement, however student must be attending a U.S. accredited institution.

API Study Abroad and Intern Abroad Scholarships

Description: Scholarships are open to API program participants. There are multiple scholarships with specific requirements – see website for details. In addition to general scholarships, there are scholarships specifically open to community college students, military veterans, non-traditional students, students with disabilities, minority students, LGBTQ students, STEM majors, and student athletes.

Indianapolis PFLAG Scholarships

Description: Scholarship is open to residents of Indiana who are graduating high school seniors or current college students who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, or queer or an ally. Applicant must demonstrate past or present service tot he LGBTQ+ community.

First in Family Humanist Scholarship; Freedom From Religion Foundation Forwards Freethought Scholarship

Amount: $5,000
Closing Date: June 26, 2020
Description: Scholarship is open to students of color who identify as agnostic, atheist, humanist and/or secular. Preference will be given to students who are first in their families to go to college and students who are (or have been) in foster care, homeless, undocumented and/or LGBTQ are encouraged to apply. Applicant must provide an admission letter to a two or four-year college.

AfterCollege STEM Inclusion Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to currently enrolled students working towards a degree in a field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics from a group underrepresented in their field of study. Underrepresented groups may be defined by gender, race, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, nationality, and other non-visible differences.

Spectrum Scholars
Sponsor: Spectrum | UNCF
Amount: $20,000
Closing Date: June 30, 2020
Description: Scholars program is open to rising college juniors (Class of 2022) with financial need. Applicant must be African American and have permanent residency in or attending an accredited college/university within Charter’s 41-state service footprint. Scholarships must agree to attend all Spectrum Scholars planned events and must have a desire to explore an internship with Charter after completing their junior year. Students who identify as LGBTQ, students with disabilities, or students with military backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

PFLAG of Jacksonville Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current college students who reside in the Jacksonville metropolitan area (Florida) and must demonstrate service to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
