LGBTQ Scholarships

If you are a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + community, there are scholarships out there just for you. In addition, many of these scholarships are also open to LGBTQ+ allies.

Follansbee-Hansen Scholarship
Sponsor: PFLAG Sacramento
Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: May 31, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and college freshman from the Sacramento area who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning or intersex.

Kay Longcope Scholarship Award
Sponsor: National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association (NLGJA)
Amount: Up to $3,000
Closing Date: May 31, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to LGBT individuals of color planning to pursue a career in journalism and are able to demonstrate their passion and commitment to the profession.

Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award
Sponsor: National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association (NLGJA)
Amount: Up to $5,000
Closing Date: May 31, 2017
Description: Scholarships are open to current or incoming undergraduate or graduate students who are enrolled in an accredited journalism or mass communications field. Applicant must also demonstrate an awareness of the issues facing the LGBT community and the importance of fair and accurate news coverage.

LGBT Liberation Scholarships

Amount: Up to $2,500
Closing Date: May 31, 2017
Description: Scholarships are open to students who are at least 17 years of age and are accepted to or attending a full-time higher education program at an accredited institution of learning. Applicant must be a LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and ally) activists. Preference will be given to law students interested in advancing the civil rights of LGBT Americans.

1L Diversity Scholarship for Future Leaders
Sponsor: California Bar Foundation
Amount: $7,700
Closing Date: June 1, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to diverse law students who are about to start law school in California. Diversity includes a broad array of backgrounds and life experiences, including students from groups or with skills or attributes that are underrepresented in the legal profession, and specifically inducing students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize
Sponsor: The Association for Queer Anthropology
Amount: $500
Closing Date: June 1, 2017
Description: Prize is open to graduate and undergraduate students in acknowledgment of outstanding anthropological work on 1) a lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans* topic, or 2) a critical interrogation of sexualities and genders more broadly defined.

Out to Innovate Scholarship
Sponsor: National Organization of Lesbian and Gay Scientists and Technical Professionals Inc.
Amount: UP to $5,000
Closing Date: June 3, 2017
Description: Scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) programs who are either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an active ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

API Study Abroad and Intern Abroad Scholarships

Description: Scholarships are open to API program participants. There are multiple scholarships with specific requirements – see website for details. In addition to general scholarships, there are scholarships specifically open to community college students, military veterans, non-traditional students, students with disabilities, minority students, LGBTQ students, STEM majors, and student athletes.

AfterCollege STEM Inclusion Scholarship

Amount: $500
Closing Date: June 30, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to currently enrolled students working towards a degree in a field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics and from a group underrepresented in their field of study. Underrepresented groups may be defined by gender, race, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, nationality, and other non-visible differences.
