LGBTQ Scholarships

If you are a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + community, there are scholarships out there just for you. In addition, many of these scholarships are also open to LGBTQ+ allies.

Asian Pacific Fund Scholarships
Sponsor: Asian Pacific Fund
Amount: Up to $20,000
Closing Date: February 23, 2018
Description: Scholarships are open to students in California who are of Asian descent. Multiple scholarships available with specific requirements. See website for details. In addition to general scholarships, there are scholarships specifically open to Computer Science, Economics, Environmental or Physical Science, Engineering, Journalism or Mathematics majors, and LGBT students.

Youth Courage Awards
Sponsor: Colin Higgins Foundation
Amount: $10,000
Closing Date: February 23, 2018
Description: Award is open to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two Spirit, Queer and Questioning youth activists (through age 20) who have transformed their experience with bigotry and discrimination into opportunities to inspire others by taking action, rallying support, building community, and working to change the systems and institutions that impact their lives. Applicant must be nominated.

American Atheists Scholarships
Sponsor: American Atheists
Amount: Up to $1,000
Closing Date: February 26, 2018
Description: Scholarships are open to incoming and current college students in the United States who have at least a 2.5 GPA. Applicant does not need to be U.S. citizen, but must attend a U.S. based institution. Applicant must demonstrate atheist activism in their communities and schools. In addition to the general scholarships, there is a scholarship open specifically to a member of the LGBT community.

Iowa’s Matthew Shepard Scholarship

Amount: Up to $13,000 over four years
Closing Date: March 1, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to openly LGBTQ Iowa high school seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better who demonstrate LGBTQ activism and community service, and a history of high moral and ethical standards and conduct.

Journalism Diversity Scholarship
Sponsor: The National Press Club
Amount: Up to $10,000 over four years
Closing Date: March 1, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA who are planning to have a career in journalism and will bring diversity to U.S. journalism.

GLBT Chamber of Commerce Foundation Scholarships

Description: Scholarships are open to current college students who are residents of Texas and self-identify as GLBT or is a member of a GLBT family or an ally.

Alexander Foundation Scholarships

Description: Scholarships are open to LGBTQIA+ students in Colorado who are seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution in the State of Colorado.

Marc E. Lewis Youth Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to Massachusetts graduating high school seniors who have made a high school and/or community sports program safer for and more inclusive of LGBTQ student-athletes, as either a role model or ally.

Michael Greenberg Student Writing Competition
Sponsor: National LGBT Bar Association
Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: March 16, 2018
Description: Competition is open to students enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school. Applicant must submit an essay on a legal issue affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or intersex community.

PFLAG SD Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to LGBT graduating high school seniors and current college students who are residents of San Diego County.

Helen and Bob Brill Scholarship
Sponsor: PFLAG Hartford
Amount: At least $1,000
Closing Date: March 23, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to allies and members of the LGBTQ community in Connecticut who are between the ages of 16 and 24 years of age and who are planning to attend or are already attending a college, technical school or other accredited post-high school educational institution during the upcoming term.

AfterCollege STEM Inclusion Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to currently enrolled students working towards a degree in a field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics from a group underrepresented in their field of study. Underrepresented groups may be defined by gender, race, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, nationality, and other non-visible differences.

Gamma Mu Foundation Scholarships

Description: Scholarships are open to gay men under 35 years of age who have completed high school by June of the current year, and are U.S. citizens.

Live Out Loud Educational Scholarship

Description: Scholarships are open to graduating high school seniors who identify as LGBTQ and are from the Tri-State area (New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey).

PFLAG San Jose/Peninsula Scholarships

Amount: $3,000
Closing Date: March 31, 2018
Description: Scholarships are open to graduating high school seniors who reside in or attend high school in Santa Clara or San Mateo Counties (California). Applicant’s history, activities, and personal plans must demonstrate support for justice and equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons.

PFLAG Tucson Scholarships

Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: March 31, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students from Southern Arizona attending an institution OR a student coming to southern Arizona to attend college or university. Applicant must be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or a straight ally.
