LGBTQ Scholarships

If you are a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + community, there are scholarships out there just for you. In addition, many of these scholarships are also open to LGBTQ+ allies.

Gayborhood Scholarship

Description: Scholarships are open to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students who are members of the LGBT community (or an ally) and have an interest in service to the LGBT community.

Tang Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to self-identified Asian/Pacific Islander students (at least 25% API ancestry) who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender and have/will graduate from a high school in one of the nine Bay Area counties (California).

Audria M. Edwards Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to students who will be pursuing post-secondary, undergraduate education in an accredited institution or program during the coming school year. Applicant must be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender OR have a LGBT parent AND applicant must have resided for at least one year in the state of Oregon or in Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, or Wahkiakum County in Washington.

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who have advanced the civil rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population. Applicant must reside in Southern California.

Kay Longcope Scholarship Award

Description: Scholarship is open to LGBT individuals of color planning to pursue a career in journalism and are able to demonstrate their passion and commitment to the profession.

Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award

Description: Scholarships are open to current or incoming undergraduate or graduate students who are enrolled in an accredited journalism or mass communications field. Applicant must also demonstrate an awareness of the issues facing the LGBT community and the importance of fair and accurate news coverage.

Description: Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in a basic law enforcement training program in the United States who identify as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or transgender.

Follansbee-Hansen Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and college freshman from the Sacramento area who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning or intersex.

Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize

Description: Prize is open to graduate and undergraduate students in acknowledgment of outstanding anthropological work on 1) a lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans* topic, or 2) a critical interrogation of sexualities and genders more broadly defined.

Out to Innovate Scholarship
Sponsor: National Organization of Lesbian and Gay Scientists and Technical Professionals Inc.

Description: Scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) programs who are either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an active ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

Levin-Goffee Scholarship for LGBTQI Immigrants

Description: Scholarship is open to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, or intersex students who are enrolled at an accredited, nonprofit school in New York City. Applicant must not hold U.S. citizenship, a green card, or an F-1 visa.

API Study Abroad and Intern Abroad Scholarships

First in the Family Humanist Scholarship – Freedom From Religion Catherine Fahringer Memorial Award

Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors who live in the U.S. and who identify as atheist, agnostic, humanist and/or secular, and are accepted into two or four-year colleges. Preference is given to students of color (Black/African American, Latino(a), Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American). Students who are (or have been) in foster care, homeless, undocumented and/or LGBTQ are encouraged to apply.

AfterCollege STEM Inclusion Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to currently enrolled students working towards a degree in a field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics from a group underrepresented in their field of study. Underrepresented groups may be defined by gender, race, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, nationality, and other non-visible differences.

GAPA Foundation Scholarships
Sponsor: Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) Foundation

Description: Scholarships are open to high school seniors and current college students who express activism in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) and/or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities; however, applicants do not need to identify as either to apply. Preference will be given to those who identify as both API and LGBTQ. There is no citizenship requirement, however student must be attending a U.S. accredited institution.

ICOAA Scholarship Program

Description: Scholarship is open to students fully admitted to a college, university, trade or vocational school who are an Alaska resident. Awards are based on economic need, scholastic achievement, leadership ability and contributions to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allied (GLBTA) community. Preference is given to members of the GLBTA community.
