Quick note to readers: I took a quick break from Scholarship Saturday while I was out of town celebrating Christmas with family and friends. There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

KSCPP’s 9th National Essay Contest

Description: Contest is open to Middle School and High School students. To apply, applicant must read a book available on the KSCPP website and submit an essay on a given topic.

MarvelOptics.com Scholarship Essay Contest

Amount: $1,500
Deadline: Jan. 5, 2016
Description: Contest is open to current, full-time students of accredited four-year American universities and colleges. Applicant must submit an essay on a topic related to sight.

Young Patriots Essay Contest
Sponsor: National Center for Policy Analysis and Copart
Amount: Up to $5,000
Deadline: Jan. 5, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to any American citizen or lawful resident who is currently a student in grades 6-12, or is a recent high school graduate who has never enrolled as a degree-seeking student in any college or university. Applicant must submit an essay on a given prompt on given prompts related to NSA surveillance.

Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards
Sponsor: Helen Diller Family Foundation
Amount: Up to $36,000
Deadline: Jan. 6, 2016
Description: Award is open to Jewish teens who are between the ages of 13 and 19 at the time of nomination. Student must have demonstrated impressive leadership and are actively engaged in community service projects that embody the value of tikkun olam (repair of the world).

John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest
Sponsor: John F. Kennedy Library
Amount: Up to $10,000
Deadline: Jan. 6, 2016
Description: Applicant must be in grades 9-12 and must submit an essay on a topic related to political courage.

GE – Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program
Sponsor: Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Library
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: Jan. 7, 2016
Description: Applicant must be a high school senior and demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship at school, at the workplace, and in the community. Applicant must also demonstrate financial need.

APIASF Scholarship Program
Sponsor: Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund
Amount: Up to $15,000
Deadline: Jan. 8, 2016
Description: Applicant must be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity and enrolling as an undergraduate student in a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall of 2016.

Safe Jobs for Youth Poster Contest
Sponsor: Labor Occupational Health Program, UC Berkeley
Amount: Up to $300
Deadline: Jan. 8, 2016
Description: Contest is open to California teens between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. Contestant must create a poster on the theme, “Safe Jobs for Youth.”

Ron Brown Scholar Program

Deadline: Jan. 9, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to African American high school seniors who have made a significant contribution to society.

Kelly Lynn Lutz Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: Jan. 10, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to students who have lost at least one parent to cancer before the age of 22.

Letters About Literature Contest
Sponsor: Center for the Book in the Library of Congress
Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: Jan. 11, 2016
Description: Competition is open to students in grades four through eight. Applicant must select a fiction or nonfiction book, poem or play and write a personal letter to the author.

Pride Foundation Scholarships
Sponsor: Pride Foundation
Amount: Varies
Deadline: Jan. 11, 2016
Description: Applicant must be a resident of the Northwest (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, or Washington) and pursuing post-secondary education. Applicant must also be LGBTQ or a straight ally student leaders.

Truman D. Picard Scholarship
Sponsor: Intertribal Timber Council
Amount: Up to $2,500
Deadline: Jan. 11, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current college students who are Native American and pursuing a higher education in Natural Resources.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program
Sponsor: Gates Millennium Scholars
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: Jan. 13, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open for students who will enroll for the first time at a U.S. accredited college or university in the fall of 2016. Applicant must be African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American.

Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship
Sponsor: Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: Jan. 13, 2016
Description: Scholarship is open to four-year college bound California high school seniors with excellent credentials who have demonstrated a breadth of interests, a driving desire to succeed in their chose endeavors, outstanding community citizenship and the ability to share their experiences through the written word.

  3. Thank you for all the work you do! By the way though, the Letters About Literature scholarship is actually for grades 4 through 12 not 4 through 8.

    • Thank you, Hanna. Yes, the Contest is open to students in grades 4 through 12. However, the deadline for students in grades 9-12 was December 4. The January 11 deadline is for students in grades 4 through 8.
