There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors attending school in the United States. Applicant must review a famous quote from Tagore and write an essay based on its relevance to current times and how it can help today’s society.

WTS Scholarship

Deadline: Oct. 21, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to residents of Oregon or Southwest Washington who are currently enrolled in or accepted to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a transportation-related field. Multiple scholarships available – see website for details.

Golden Door Scholars Program

Deadline: Oct. 27, 2015
Description: Scholarship program is open to DACA qualified students who live in a state that does not allow in-state tuition for DACA students. Applicant must be interested in technology or applying technology in their chosen field of study and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Sports Equipment Drive Scholarship

Amount: $5,000
Deadline: Oct. 31, 2015
Description: According to sources, “1 in 5 kids from underserved communities don’t play sports. One reason is that equipment is too expensive.” Student must collect gently-used sports equipment and donate to a community center and prove they did it by taking a photo. Student will then receive an entry for the scholarship.

Stick or Treat Contest

Description: Contest is open to students ages 14 and up. Applicant must submit an image of their decorated and/or accessorized Halloween themed pumpkin (real or artificial) using Duct Tape brand duct tape.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program

Description: Scholarship program is open to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need. Scholars will be selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, a desire to help others, and leadership.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award

Amount: $5,000
Deadline: Nov. 3, 2015
Description: Award is open to students in grades 5-12 who are legal residents of any U.S. state or Washington, D.C. Applicant must have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application.

Wholesale Halloween Costumes Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to students enrolled at an accredited two or four year college or vocational school within the United States and be a legal resident of the United States or hold a valid student visa. Applicant must carve a pumpkin and submit photos of the progression of the carving.

Create Real Impact Contest

Description: Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia between the ages of 14 and 22 years of age. Student must submit an original work (video, music, creative writing, or artwork) showcasing their idea for a solution to the very real problem of reckless and distracted driving.

Description: Scholarship is open to students 25 years of age or younger who are current or former high school students wand will attend or is attending college within the United States or its territories. Applicant must submit a poem on “what makes you… you?”

Description: Talent Search is open to any student who is enrolled in and attending his or her last year of secondary school in the U.S. or a U.S. territory or a U.S. citizens enrolled in their senior year of secondary school. Applicant must present a full, scientific report about research of their choosing in the areas of science, math, engineering, and/or medicine.

TicketCity Annual College Scholarship Program

Description: Scholarship is open to full-time Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year university in the United States. Applicant must submit an essay on one of three given essay prompts related to college sporting events.

Disabled War Veterans Scholarship

Amount: $2,500
Deadline: Nov. 13, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to active-duty service personnel, honorably discharged U.S. military veterans reservists, and National Guard personnel who are disabled because of wounds received during combat service in Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations.

Maryknoll Student Essay Contest

Description: Scholarship is open to international and U.S. students who are enrolled in grades 6-12. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic.
