There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Description: According to the scholarship site, “people face harassment due to their religious (or non-religious) beliefs. To be eligible for the scholarship, student must enter their phone number and the phone number of three friends at at the scholarship site. Students will then receive a text message that can start your virtual conversation about religious intolerance.

Screen Statement Scholarship

Description: According to the scholarship site, “almost half of young people have seen or experienced online harassment, which can seriously impact self-esteem.” To be eligible for the scholarship, students must place support and tips on making a happier internet on friends’ devices and take a photo. For every 10 notes you post, you get an entry into the scholarship contest.

Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $2,500
Deadline: Apr. 30, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors, students with GED diplomas, undergraduate (two-year or four-year) college students, and students at trade or vocational schools. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents, 25 years of age or younger, and have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Snowdrop Scholarship Program

Description: Scholarship is open to college bound pediatric cancer patients.

American Floral Endowment Scholarship Programs
Sponsor: American Floral Endowment
Amount: Up to $4,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarships are open to students who will be pursuing a career that is in a field related to floriculture or horticulture. Applicant must also be a citizen or resident of the United States or Canada, or be enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States or Canada.

Annuity.org Scholarship

Amount: Up to $2,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students enrolled (or will be enrolled) in a U.S. college. Applicant must submit an essay on a topic related to winning the lottery.

ASHRAE Engineering Technology Scholarships
Sponsor: American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineering (ASHRAE)
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to full-time students enrolled in an accredited undergraduate engineering or engineering tecnology program recognized by ASHRAE. There are multiple scholarships available, including scholarships for high school seniors and university-specific scholarships.

CBC Spouses Heineken USA Performing Arts Scholarship
Sponsor: Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation
Amount: Up to $3,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students at an accredited college or university OR a current high school senior preparing to become a full-time undergraduate student. Applicant must be pursuing a major in the performing arts and planning a career in performing arts. The scholarship is intended for African-American students, and preference will be given to African-American students residing in BC member districts.

CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship
Sponsor: Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation
Amount: $3,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to students with majors in the visual arts including, but not limited to, architecture, ceramics, drawing, fashion, graphic design, illustration, interior design, painting, photography, sketching, video projection and other decorative arts. Applicant must be currently/planning to be enrolled in the upcoming academic year as a full-time undergraduate student. Preference will be given to African-American students residing in a CBC Member district.

Countdown to College Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to college-bound teens in 9th-12th grades. Students need to sign up for Potential Magazine’s free weekly eNewsletter and will automatically be entered to win the scholarship.

DutchCrafters Heritage Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to students enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited four-year undergraduate institution located in the United States. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or maintain legal residency in the United States and have a 3.0 GPA. Student must submit an essay on how their cultural heritage will shape their vocational aspirations.

Description: Scholarships is open to incoming freshman through graduate students who are enrolled in a hospitality management degree program.

EOCS Scholarships

Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who are registered active members of a Boy or Girl Scout unit and earned the Eagle Scout Award for boys or Gold Award for girls. Applicant must also be an active member of an Eastern Orthodox Church and have received the Alpha Omega Religious Scout Award.

Hard of Hearing or Deaf Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate students with a minimum 40db bilaterial hearing loss, as evidenced on audiogram by an SRT of 40db or greater in both ears. Applicant must be pursing a bachelor’s degree on a full-time basis at a college or university in the United States.

Herbert Lehman Education Fund Scholarship
Sponsor: NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.
Amount: $2,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors or college freshman who are enrolled, or plan to enroll, full-time at a four-year college or university. Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, financial need, and a commitment to public service.

IAPMO Scholarship Essay Contest
Sponsor: International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO)
Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to current high school seniors or current college students enrolled full-time in an accredited technical school, community college, trade school, or four-year college or university. Applicant must submit an essay on “what role can IAPMO play in helping the plumbing industry develop new sources of potable water?”

Matters of Life and Death Scholarship Writing Contest

Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Applicant must be a high school junior or senior currently attending a California high school (or home-school). Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to the Death and Dignity law.

MG James Ursano Dependent Children of Soldiers Scholarship Program

Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to students under the age of 23 who are dependents of a Soldier on federal active duty, a retired Soldier, or a deceased active or deceased retired Soldier.

Nordstrom Scholarship Program

Description: Scholarship is open to high school juniors who live in a state or U.S. territory with a Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack store. Applicant must volunteer or participate in community service or extracurricular activities.

NSF Peer Tutoring Scholarship Competition
Sponsor: National Scholar Foundation, Inc.
Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to non-paid student tutors in middle and high school. Applicant must submit a 500-word essay on a given topic related to peer tutoring.

Scott Delgadillo Scholarship
Sponsor: Friends of Scott Foundation (Friends to Children with Cancer)
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors who are residents of the state of California and are currently diagnosed with cancer, currently receiving cancer treatment, or is cancer survivor.

SHPE Foundation Scholarships
Sponsor: Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Foundation
Amount: Up to $5,000
Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarships are open to graduating high school seniors through graduate students who are majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degree program. Applicant must be a SHPE member (or join SHPE after high school graduation). Students should visit website for specific scholarship requirements as the organization has multiple scholarship opportunities.

Swim with Mike Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to athletes who participated in organized competitive youth, high school or collegiate athletics and subsequently have sustained a life changing accident or illness (e.g. paralysis, blindness, cancer, amputation, head injuries).

The “First Step” Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to students who will be attending a higher education institution in the fall of 2015. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to driving under the influence.

WyzAnt College Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to anyone who plans to be enrolled in a college or university sometime between Aug. 1, 2015 and Nov. 1, 2017 (this includes most high school sophomores through college juniors). Applicant must submit a short essay about how education has empowered them.

Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and accepted into a college bachelor’s degree program in speech, physical, occupational, or music therapy, or special education or nursing.
