There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Here are your scholarships for Saturday, October 4, 2014

Varsity Tutors $1,000 Scholarship
Sponsor: Varsity Tutors
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: October 15, 2014 (scholarship is offered every month with a deadline of the 15th of every month)
Eligibility: Scholarship is limited to individuals who are at least 16 years. Applicants must be a legal residence of one of the fifty United States or the District of Columbia.
Requirements: Write an essay between 200 and 900 words and then promote entry on social media.

#RocktheSAT Scholarship
Sponsor: Testive
Amount: $500
Deadline: October 15, 2014 (scholarship is offered every month with a deadline of the 15th of every month)
Eligibility: Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, 13 years of age or older, and be a high school junior who expects to take the SAT in the next 12 months. Student must also have a Testive account (or create an account – it’s free!).
Requirements: Student receives one entry for each day you answer a question and one entry for each student you successfully refer during the month campaign.

Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway
Sponsor: Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc.
Amount: Up to $100,000
Deadline: October 20, 2014
Eligibility: Entrant must be a U.S. legal resident of an eligible state and be between the ages of 18 and 24 years old.
Requirements: Entrants must tell them their “one of a kind goal.” If entrant’s submission gets 50 online votes, entrant will be asked to provide a one-minute video about their goal.

Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest
Sponsor: Ayn Rand Institute
Amount: Up to $10,000
Deadline: October 24, 2014
Eligibility: Entrant must be a 12th grader, college undergraduate or graduate student.
Requirements: Entrant must submit an essay between 800 and 1,600 words on a topic related to Atlas Shrugged.

Williams-Mystic/Joseph Conrad Ocean Essay Contest
Sponsor: Williams-Mystic
Amount: $500
Deadline: October 24, 2014
Eligibility: Entrant must be an undergraduate student of any major in good academic standing at an accredited college or university. High school seniors are also eligible.
Requirements: Entrant must submit an essay between 1,000 and 5,000 words on a topic related to the ocean or a major body of water. The essay can be either fiction or nonfiction and may be nature writing, environmental or political activism, literary, history, or storytelling.

HACU IES Abroad Diversity Scholarship
Sponsor: IES Abroad
Amount: Up to $5,000
Deadline: October 25, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must be a US citizen or permanent resident and applying to or accepted to enroll in a summer, semester or academic year IES Abroad program. Applicant must also have at least a 3.3 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
Requirements: Applicant must submit a completed application, transcript, faculty letter of recommendation, financial aid forms and an academic essay based on a prompt given by scholarship organization.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship
Sponsor: Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc.
Amount: $22,000
Deadline: October 25, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must be enrolled full-time as a high school senior in the United States with plans to enter college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation. Applicant must also be a United States citizen and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
Requirements: Applicant must submit online application, high school transcript, income verification, and other forms required by scholarship committee.

IES Merit-Based David Porter Diversity Scholarship
Sponsor: IES Abroad
Amount: Up to $5,000
Deadline: October 25, 2014
Eligibility: Scholarship is open to students who have been traditionally under-represented on study abroad programs. Applicant must be accepted to and will enroll in an IES Abroad program and have a 3.3 GPA.
Requirements: Applicant must submit completed application, transcript, faculty letter of recommendation, diversity personal statement, and an academic essay.

IES Merit-Based Scholarship for Under-Represented Students
Sponsor: Institute for the International Education of Students
Amount: Up to $3,000
Deadline: October 25, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must have a 3.3 GPA, attend a college or university that is a member or associate member of IES and be accepted to an IES Abroad program.
Requirements: Applicant must submit a completed application, transcript, faculty letter of recommendation, diversity personal statement, and an academic essay.

The Dream.US Scholarship
Sponsor: TheDream.US
Amount: Up to $25,000
Deadline: October 26, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must be a first-time college student, have a high school un-weighted GPA of 2.5 or higher, been board after June 16, 1981 and have come to the United States before reaching the 16th birthday. Applicant must also be DACA or TPS eligible and have applied for or received DACA or TPS approval and demonstrate significant unmet financial need. Student must also be attending a partner college.
Requirements: Applicant must submit a completed application, two essays, DACA or TPS application or approval, financial documents, and transcripts.

Alexander Scholarship Fund
Sponsor: Y’s Men International
Amount: $500 – $2,500
Deadline: October 30, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must be a YMCA oriented college student seeking an undergraduate degree and a YMCA career.
Requirements: Applicant must submit extensive application.
