There are thousands of scholarships out there. Below you will find many scholarships, most with general eligibility requirements. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Description: Contest is open to legal residents of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia who are enrolled as a high school junior or senior and plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study after high school. Applicant must be nominated by a high school counselor, school official or community organization leader with personal knowledge of the student. Only the first 1,000 nominations will be accepted.

BNSF Railway Foundation Scholarship

Amount: Up to $2,250
Closing Date: September 28, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to high-achieving students from Tarrant County, Texas who are full-time enrolled degree seeking candidates at a UNCF-member institution OR at any other fully accredited U.S. located college or university during the 2018-2019 academic year. Applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA and have demonstrated unmet need.

Back to School ’18 Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to students in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades and living in the following areas of Texas: Alvin ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Deer Park ISD, Dickinson ISD, Friendswood ISD, Galveston ISD, Hitchcock ISD, LaPorte ISD, Pasadena ISD, Pearland ISD, or Texas City ISD. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to college roommates or words of wisdom for students in the grades below them.

Beverly Hills Immigration Lawyers Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: September 30, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to current college students who are either U.S. born students whose parents are from another country, or a foreign-born student who immigrated to the United States. DACA, undocumented immigrants, and students currently undergoing the green card application process are especially encouraged to apply. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic related to Sanctuary cities.

Courage to Grow Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to juniors and seniors in high school and college students with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicant must explain in 250 words or less why they believe they should be awarded the scholarship.

Mexican-American Dream Scholarship

Amount: Up to $1,000
Closing Date: September 30, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to full-time students at four-year institutions or two-year community colleges who are considered undocumented or benefit from AB-540 or DACA. Applicant must be attending school in one of the following California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Inland Empire, San Bernardino or Ventura.

ISAC Grant Programs

Description: Grants are open to residents of Illinois who are enrolled at least half-time at an ISAC-approved Illinois two- or four-year college. There is a grant available to dependents of police or fire officers and dependents of correctional officers.

Wiki Loves Monuments

Amount: Up to $500 in the form of a gift card of the winner’s choosing
Closing Date: October 1, 2018
Description: Program is open to all individuals worldwide. Individual must submit a photo of a U.S. historic or culture site. Program will accept multiple photos.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Sponsor: Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State
Amount: Varies
Closing Date: October 2, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to current undergraduate students who are receiving the Federal Pell Grant. Applicant must be applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student’s academic institution.

Chet Advance Scholarship
Sponsor: Connecticut State Treasurer’s Office
Amount: Up to $2,500
Closing Date: October 2, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to high school freshman and high school seniors who attend school in Connecticut OR attend a parochial school outside of Connecticut and either the student or one of the student’s parents or guardian reside in Connecticut.

Flinn Scholarship
Sponsor: Flinn Foundation
Amount: Varies
Closing Date: October 5, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who are U.S. citizens and Arizona residents. Applicant must participate and demonstrate leadership in a variety of extracurricular activities, attain at least a 3.5 GPA, and rank in the top five percent of their graduating class (if the school reports class rank).

Apple HBCU Scholars Program
Sponsor: Thurgood Marshall College Fund | Apple
Amount: Up to $25,000
Closing Date: October 7, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to students enrolled full-time at a four-year accredited HBCU or PBI (Predominately Black Institution) who will be graduating between December 2019 and May 2021. The highly competitive program targets STEM students, but opportunities exist for students of all disciplines.

Richard L. Sykes Memorial Scholarship
Sponsor: UNCF
Amount: Up to $5,000 – renewable up to five years
Closing Date: October 12, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to college freshmen who reside in or are a permanent resident of the greater Los Angeles area and live in one of the following zip codes: 90000-93888. Student must be an African-American college freshman and preference will be given to students attending HBCUs-particulary UNCF member institutions.

Scholarship for Study Abroad in New Zealand
Sponsor: Go Overseas
Amount: Up to $15,000
Closing Date: October 12, 2018
Description: Scholarship is open to legal U.S. residents of the 50 United States and District of Columbia (except Rhode Island) and Canadian residents who are 18 years of age or older who would like to study abroad in New Zealand. Applicant must write a short essay why they want to study abroad in New Zealand and a creative photo.
