Attending college can be quite expensive for students and their families. Luckily, there are many college scholarships and contests available to help pay for a college education. Students should seek out and apply for scholarships in which they meet the eligibility requirements. Below are a handful of scholarships with May 2017 due dates. Description: Scholarship is open to college-bound teens in grades 9th-12th grades. Students need to sign up for Potential Magazine’s free weekly eNewsletter and they will automatically be entered to win the scholarship.

Paradigm Challenge

Amount: Up to $100,000
Closing Date: May 1, 2017
Description: Challenge is open to students aged 4 to 18 years of age (as of May 1, 2017). Applicants may work in a team or alone in creating an original and creative way to generate new ideas to reduce waste in homes, schools, communities, and around the world.

Youth Forward Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: May 1, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to current full-time high school and college students. Applicant must submit an essay on a topic related to volunteerism.

America the Great?! Scholarship Slam

Closing Date: May 10, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to students 25 years of age or younger who are current or former high school students and who will attend or is attending college within the U.S. or its territories. Applicant must submit a poem on their personal relationship with the country.

Live Mas Scholarship

Amount: Up to $25,000
Closing Date: May 12, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, between 16 and 24 years of age, who are on track to apply for accredited post-high school/post-secondary educational programs. Applicant must submit a video (two minutes or less) that tells the story of their life’s passion.

Brower Youth Awards for Environmental Leadership

Amount: $3,000
Closing Date: May 15, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to environmental change leaders ages 13 to 22 (as of Jul. 1, 2017) living in North America (including Mexico, Canada, and some Caribbean Islands) and U.S. Territories.

Jane Austen Society of North America Essay Contest
Sponsor: Jane Austen Society of North America
Amount: Up to $1,000
Closing Date: May 21, 2017
Description: Contest is open to students world-wide who are enrolled in high school, college/university, or graduate school. Student must submit an essay on a given topic related to a Jane Austen work.

Active Life Scholarship to Tackle Your Weakness

Closing Date: May 31, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to current high school and college students who are 15 years of age or older. Applicant must submit three to five sentences answering one question related to weakness.

C.I.P. Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to students age 17 years of age and older who plan to start a program of higher education within the next 12 months or who are currently enrolled in a program of higher education. Applicant must submit an online form and a short essay on their primary goal for going to school.

Fifth Month Scholarship

Amount: $1,500
Closing Date: May 31, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to students 13 years of age or older who are legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia who are currently enrolled (or will enroll no later than the fall of 2023) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education. Applicant will need to submit a short response to a given prompt.
