Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Description: Scholarship is open to current college sophomores, juniors, and graduate students with at least a 3.0 who are pursuing a study that is related to the hydropower industry: Engineering, Sciences (Biology, Fisheries, and Hydrology), communications, or environmental studies.

SunTrust Scholarship Sweepstakes

Closing Date: February 17, 2017
Description: Sweepstakes is open to high school seniors and college undergraduates with permanent residence in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia. Students can enter online or by mail once during each two-week drawing period.

Because History Matters Scholarship
Sponsor: Super1Foods
Amount: Up to $3,000
Closing Date: February 22, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas who live within the markets of Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores. Applicant must submit a completed application and an essay on an African-American individual who the applicant believes has made a significant achievement and contribution to society.

Dr. Arnita Young Boswell Scholarship
Sponsor: National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc.
Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: February 27, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to African-American graduating high school seniors with at least a 2.75 GPA. Applicant must be involved in school and community activities and must have completed at least 100 hours of documented community service.

Dr. Wynetta A. Frazier Scholarship
Sponsor: National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc.
Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: February 27, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to African-American students who are at least 21 years of age and are accepted to a college or university. Applicant must demonstrate special talents gained through previous academic work, civic contributions, and/or social services.

Courage to Grow Scholarship
Sponsor: Courage To Grow
Amount: $500
Closing Date: February 28, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to juniors and seniors in high school or college students with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicant must explain in 250 words or less why they believe they should be awarded the scholarship.

TMA Scholarship Program
Sponsor: Toshiba Machine Co, America
Amount: $2,500
Closing Date: February 28, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in full-time undergraduate study who are enrolled in an industrial maintenance or plastic processing program of study.

Youth Eco-Hero Scholarship
Sponsor: Action for Nature

Closing Date: February 28, 2017
Description: The award is available to students between the ages of eight and 16 who exhibit environmental activism. Applicant must carry out an action-based and self-initiated project that concerns environmental health, advocacy, research, or protection of the natural world.

AACF Scholarships

Closing Date: March 1, 2017
Description: Scholarships are open to graduating high school seniors and current college students in the state of Alabama. There are multiple scholarships available – see website for details.

AACL Scholarship
Sponsor: Armenian-American Citizens League Educational Fund
Amount: Up to $2,000
Closing Date: March 1, 2017
Description: Scholarship is open to permanent residents of the United States who have been living in California for at least two years and are of Armenian descent. Applicant must be enrolled full-time at an accredited college in the United States and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.
