There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Description: Scholarship is open to members of STARFLEET, the International Star Trek Fan Association. Applicant must be continuing or beginning their studies at an at any accredited institution of higher education in the fall.

Description: Scholarship is open to high school seniors and current college students in the United States. Applicant must write an essay on a topic related to the student’s favorite children’s author.

“Be More” Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to current high school seniors or college students under the age of 24 who are residents or will be attending college in Texas, New York, or Pennsylvania. Applicant must submit an essay on a given topic on how the student is more than just a student.

I Heart Dad Scholarship (Family Heart Health Scholarship)

Description: According to sources, “heart disease is one of the biggest health problems for men in the U.S.” Applicant must find a blood pressure machine near their location (website provides resources to find one) and get their dad (and other close adults) to check his blood pressure.

Mark Beaumont Scholarship Fund

Description: Scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students starting their second year or a graduate student attending an accredited college or university in the United States during the 2015-2016 academic school year. Applicant must have the intention to enter the video game industry focusing on the business of interactive entertainment.

Mays Mission for the Handicapped Scholarship

Description: Scholarship is open to students who have a documented significant physical and/or mental disability.

Mic Check Racism Scholarship (Poetry Slam Scholarship)

Description: According to sources, “racism and discrimination seriously impact the emotional and physical well being of people who experience it.” Applicant must choose from given subjects and write a poem in response to the subject or share one of the Urban Word NYC poems. Applicant must join the virtual poetry slam on Jun. 25 and use the hashtag #miccheckracism. Applicant can get up to 15 entries into the scholarship sweepstake.

New Look Laser Tattoo Removal Scholarship

The Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Awards

Description: Contest is open to people of all ages. Contestants must submit a poem or poems that explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit. There is no entry fee for people 12 years of age or younger. Youth between 13 and 18 must submit a $5 entry fee and adults (over 18) must submit a $15 entry fee.
