2015 Bay Area commencement speakers

It is graduation season and many institutions of higher education have announced their commencement speakers. Many well know and high profile individuals will be giving the commencement speeches at the colleges and universities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Below is a partial list of some of the big names who will be sharing advice and inspiration with the 2015 Bay Area graduates.

Canada College
Congresswoman Jackie Speier will deliver the keynote address at the Canada College commencement on May 30 in Redwood City. Congresswoman Speier is the U.S. Representative for California’s 14th congressional district, which includes portions of San Mateo County and San Francisco. She has worked in public service for over 30 years.

Dominican University of California
Retired Major General Angela Salinas of the U.S. Marine Corps will give the commencement speech at Dominican University of California in San Rafael on May 16. The Major General is an alumna of Dominican and will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the commencement exercises. Major General Salinas has served in the USMC for 39 years and was the first woman in multiple roles in the USMC.

Mills College
Current Mayor of Oakland, Libby Schaaf, will be the commencement speaker for Mills College on May 16 in Oakland. Schaaf was elected mayor of the city of Oakland in 2014 and previously served on the Oakland City Council.

Menlo College
Menlo College will have two keynote speakers at the commencement ceremony on May 9 in Atherton. Michael Weatherly, known for the role of Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on NCIS, is one of the speakers. Weatherly previously attended Menlo College, but did not graduate. Mark Temple, President Chief Executive Officer of Citrix, will also be speaking at the ceremony. Citrix is a multinational software company services over 300,000 organizations worldwide.

Napa Valley College
Congressman Mike Thompson will speak the Napa Valley College commencement on May 29 in St. Helena. Congressman Thompson is the U.S. Representative for California’s 5th congressional district and has served in that position since 1999. The 5th congressional district includes Napa Valley and portions of Contra Costa, Lake, Solano, and Sonoma counties. Congressman Thompson is also an alumus of Napa Valley College and an honorary member of the Napa Valley College Foundation board of directors.

Notre Dame de Namur University
The commencement speaker for Notre Dame de Namur University will be Fedele Bauccio. Bauccio is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Bon Appetit. Bon Appetit operates over 500 cafes in 32 states. The NDNU commencement ceremony will take place on May 9 in Belmont.

St. Mary’s College of California.
The commencement ceremony for St. Mary’s College of California will take place in Moraga on May 23. Chris Matthews, political journalist and host of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” will be the commencement speaker.

San Francisco State University
California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom will deliver the commencement address for San Francisco State University students. Commencement will take place at AT&T Park in San Francisco on May 22. As the lieutenant governor, Newsom serves at the president of the California State Senate. He also serves as a UC regent and trustee for the California State University. Newsom previously served as the mayor of San Francisco. Actress Annette Bening will be receiving an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at the ceremony. Bening graduated from SFSU in 1980.

San Jose State University
House Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi, will be the commencement speaker for SJSU on May 23 in San Jose. Pelosi represents California’s 12th congressional district, which consists of the majority of the city and county of San Francisco. Pelosi previously served as the House Speaker and was the highest-ranking female politician in the United States.

Stanford University
Richard Engle will give the commencement speech at Stanford University on Jun. 14. Engle is the Chief Foreign Correspondence for NBC News. He received a Bachelor’s of Art degree in international relations from Stanford University in 1996.

University of California, Berkeley
Marc Benioff will give the commencement address at UC Berkeley on May 16. Benioff is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Salesforce. Salesforce is one of the largest American cloud companies and is best known for its customer relationship management (CRM) product.
