There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Description: Scholarship is open to high school and undergraduate student who are at least 16 years of age and a legal resident of the U.S. or hold a student visa. Applicant must provide a “visual poem” on the theme of overcoming a personal challenge.

ExploraVision Science Competition

Description: Competition is open to students in grades K through 12. Students must work in groups of 2-4 and select a technology that is present in the home, school, and/or community and explore what the technology does, how it works, and how or why it was invented.

Flawless Scholarship Slam

Deadline: Jan. 30, 2015
Description: Applicant must be 25 years of age or younger and a current or former high school student who will attend or is attending college within the U.S. or its territories. Applicant must submit a poem about what makes you FLAWLESS>

National Ag Day Essay Contest

Description: Contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12 in the 2014-2015 school year. Applicant can submit an essay and/or video on the given topic related to agriculture.

Technology Addiction Awareness Scholarship

Deadline: Jan. 30, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to current high school and college student. Applicant must submit a short application form including an 140-character message about technology addiction.

10 Words or Less Scholarship

Deadline: Jan. 31, 2015
Description: Applicant must like the StudentScholarships.org Facebook page and comment in 10 words or less why they deserve the scholarship

2015 Union Plus Scholarship Program
Sponsor: Union Plus
Award Amount: Up to $4,000
Deadline: Jan. 31, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to current and retired members of unions participating in any Union Plus program, their spouses and their dependent children. Applicant must be accepted into a U.S. accredited college, university, community college, technical or trade school at the time the award is issued.

Association of Women in Mathematics Essay Contest
Sponsor: Association for Women in Mathematics
Award Amount: Varies
Deadline: Jan. 31, 2015
Description: Contest is open to students in grades 6 through 12 and undergraduate students. Student must submit an essay based on an interview with a women currently working in a mathematical career.

Beauty School Scholarship

Description: Applicant must be planning on attending a program related to the beauty industry (cosmetology, barbering, hair design, nail technology, etc.)

I Have a Dream Scholarship

Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Description: Award is for students currently enrolled in ninth through twelfth grades in a participating region (see website for eligible areas) who have been actively involved in a volunteer activity that has had a significant, positive impact on race relations in their school or community.

Description: Scholarship is open to current college undergraduate or graduate students who have a GPA of 2.0 or better. Applicant must submit an essay on a topic related to sleep disorders, sleep apnea, or CPAP therapy.
