Many students and their parents worry about the cost of a college education. College is a huge investment, and the cost of attendance across the country continues to go up. One way to start lowering the cost of a college education is to look for and apply for scholarships.

There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Here are your scholarships for Saturday, June 14, 2014

#ROCKtheSAT Scholarship
Sponsor: Testive
Amount: $500
Deadline: June 15, 2014 – Scholarship is offered the 15th of every month
Eligibility: Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, thirteen years of age or older as of the date of entry, and be a high school junior who expects to take the SAT in the next 12 months, and have a Testive account (or create an account – it’s free!).
Requirements: You receive one entry for each day you answer a question and one entry for each student you successfully refer during the month campaign.

BigSun Scholarship

Amount: $500; number of awards vary
Deadline: June 20, 2014
Eligibility: All student athletes are eligible regardless of the sport they are engaged in. The student must be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute.
Requirements: Write a short essay answering the following questions: “How has your participation in sports affected who you are and how you relate to others? Include the effects on your personal relationship with peers and others.”

“Stand & Be Heard” Anthem Singing Contest
Sponsor: FMC Agricultural Solutions
Amount: Grand Prize – $10,000; Runner-Up – $5,000
Deadline: June 20, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be a member of a national ag-related student organization such as FFA, 4-H or NAMA to enter. Student must be between 13 and 21 years of age, a legal resident of one of the fifty United States or District of Columbia. You must directly receive, or be related to a person or entity which receives, more than 40% of your or their income through farming-related employment, including farmers, agricultural product retailers, crop consultants, agricultural product distributors, and agricultural researchers.
Requirements: Record yourself singing the National Anthem and submit video electronically to organization. If under the age of 18, parents must sign a parental consent form.

Home Stretch Scholarship

Amount: $500
Deadline: June 20, 2014
Eligibility: All current high school students are eligible and are welcome to apply to the scholarship. All applicants must be legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. $500 scholarship will be awarded toward their freshman year of college.
Requirements: Fill out short form and share “one thing you plan to do with your freedom from school this summer in three sentences or 280 characters or less.

“Design My Future” Scholarship Contest

Amount: $500 scholarship or Kindle Fire HDX tablet
Deadline: June 20, 2014
Eligibility: Contest is offered only to residents of New York and New Jersey who are between the ages of 14 and 25 and are attending, or have attended, a high school or college in New York City, and are U.S. citizens or have lawful immigration status. To be eligible for the $500 scholarships you must currently be enrolled in college or must be enrolling in the Fall 2014 semester. High School students are eligible to win a Kindle Fire HDX.
Requirements: Provide an Instagram-sized photo collage, picture or drawing responding to the following prompt: “What do you want to achieve in your professional life after graduating from college?”

International Flight Services Association Foundation Scholarships

Amount: Multiple scholarship opportunities, up to $5,000
Deadline: June 20, 2014
Eligibility: Student must have a relative that is a current IFSA member. Student must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in high school or college, in “good” academic standing, and experience in international travel, other cultures and languages will also be taken into account in the applicant assessment process.
Requirements: There are 14 different scholarships available from IFSA. Each scholarship has very similar requirements, but students must apply to each scholarship separately. Students must complete application, provide transcript and three recommendations and write an essay for each scholarship the student wishes to apply.

Providian Medical Scholarship

Deadline: June 21, 2014
Eligibility: Student must be enrolled at an accredited high school, college or university in the United States, must be either in your final year of high school or enrolled at the undergraduate level in “good standing,” must be at least 16 years old, must be attending a U.S. based institution, and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Requirements: Submit an original essay of up to 1,500 words that describes how medical equipment technology has changed the face of a college course and curriculum. No former application is required. Students must mail essay and provide complete contact information on each page of essay and a statement of transcript showing your current cumulative GPA (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).

List each idea and then briefly explain how it encourages students to learn.” They also ask that you share information about the scholarship on social media.

Eligibility: Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States. Students must be an incoming college freshmen, or current college or graduate school student. Incoming freshmen must have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5 and must have taken either the ACT or SAT. Current college students must have a cumulative college GPA of at least 2.5 GPA and enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university between August 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015.
Requirements: Fill out short form and in less than 500 words, tell them “What are 5 ways you utilize technology to be a better student?”

Eligibility: Available to all international and U.S. students who are high school seniors or older and will be enrolled in college during fall 2014. Students who apply must be U.S. residents at the time of application. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Requirements: Students must fill out application, write a 750-word essay answering “What does the phrase The American Dream mean to you and how do you embody The American Dream?” a personal statement, two letters of recommendations, official transcript and copy of tax forms.
