Many students and their parents worry about the cost of a college education. College is a huge investment, and the cost of attendance across the country continues to go up. One way to start lowering the cost of a college education is to look for and apply for scholarships.

There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday.

Here are your scholarships for Saturday, June 7, 2014

Kaplan Test Prep Scholarship
Sponsor: Kaplan Test Prep
Amount: First Prize – $3,000; Second Prize – $1,200; Third Prize – $600
Deadline: June 10, 2014
Eligibility: The Contest is open to residents of the contiguous United States, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Alaska (excluding Rhode Island), and Canada (excluding Quebec) (collectively the “Eligible Jurisdictions”), who are aged fourteen years or older as of May 5, 2014 .
Requirements: Short questionnaire with personal information and response of 100 words or less that tells them what a college education means to you.

Bruce Lee Foundation Scholarship
Sponsor: Bruce Lee Foundation
Amount: $1,000 – possibility of multiple awards
Deadline: June 13, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be 16 years old or older and will be attending a two-year college, four-year university, or licensed trade and vocational school in the United States. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and above.
Requirements: Completed application, answer some questions, and provide two letters of recommendation.

Abbott and Fenner Annual Scholarship
Sponsor: Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: June 14, 2014
Eligibility: Must be a high school junior, senior or currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution.
Requirements: Write an essay between 500 and 1,000 words on the topic they provide.

Robert L. Birkhahn Community Spirit Scholarship
Sponsor: Affinity Federal Credit Union
Amount: Unknown Amount
Deadline: June 14, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must have an Affinity membership in his/her own name, must be entering their freshman year of college and use scholarship at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university.
Requirements: Completed scholarship application, official high school transcript, copy of acceptance letter from college/university, resume/summary of extracurricular activities, honors, awards, community service, and work experience, two letters of recommendation from individuals not related to you and an application essay.

Richard A. Romano Rutgers Scholarship
Sponsor: Affinity Federal Credit Union
Amount: Unknown Amount
Deadline: June 14, 2014
Eligibility: Applicant must have an Affinity membership in his/her own name, and a graduating high school senior going o to Rutgers University, undergraduate students currently enrolled at Rutgers, or transferees from another institution into Rutgers as an undergraduate student.
Requirements: Completed scholarship application, official transcript(s), proof of Rutgers University enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year, resume/summary of extracurricular activities, honors, awards, community service, and work experience, two letters of recommendation from individuals not related to you and an application essay.

Global Lift Equipment Scholarship
Sponsor: Global Lift Equipment
Amount: $500
Deadline: June 15, 2014
Eligibility: Must be currently attending or planning on attending a post-secondary institution in Canada or the US in the fall of 2014, have a GPA of 2.5 or greater and be a resident of the United States or Canada.
Requirements: Provide a short story not to exceed 2,000 words in length.

Billy Welu Scholarship
Sponsor: Professional Bowlers Association
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: June 15, 2014
Eligibility: Must be an amateur bowler who is currently in college and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
Requirements: Completed scholarship application and short essay (500 words or less) telling them how the scholarship will positively affect your bowling, academic and personal goals.

Jimmy A. Young Memorial Education Recognition Award
Sponsor: American Respirator Care Foundation
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: June 15, 2014
Eligibility: Enrolled in an accredited respirator care training program and have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
Requirements: Completed application form, verification of enrollment, official transcript, original referenced paper on some aspect of respirator care, and letter of recommendations.

The Brad’s Deals Scholarship

Amount: Five Finalists – $2,000 each
Deadline: June 15, 2014
Eligibility: High school seniors and undergraduate students, U.S. citizen or permanent resident, currently enrolled in school and have a 3.0 GPA. Unfortunately, the scholarship is not open to residents of Rhode Island or Tennessee.
Requirements: Write a 500 word essay explaining how your college experience is or will be enabled by remarkable frugality, ingenuity, effort or thrift.

Taylor Gifts Academic Scholarship
Sponsor: Taylor Gifts
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: June 15, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be a freshman, sophomore or junior currently enrolled in a university in the United States.
Requirements: Write an essay between 750-800 words answering one of four prompts provided by the company.

#ROCKtheSAT Scholarship
Sponsor: Testive
Amount: $500
Deadline: June 15, 2014 – Scholarship is offered the 15th of every month
Eligibility: Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, thirteen years of age or older as of the date of entry, and be a high school junior who expects to take the SAT in the next 12 months, and have a Testive account (or create an account – it’s free!).
Requirements: You receive one entry for each day you answer a question and one entry for each student you successfully refer during the month campaign.

Teens Drive Smart Video Contest
Sponsor: Bridgestone TeenDriveSmart
Amount: First Place – $20,000; Second Place – $10,000; Third Place – $5,000
Deadline: June 19, 2014
Eligibility: Contest is open to legal permanent residents of the 50 United States and District of Columbia, ages 16 through 21 at the time of entry. Entrants must possess a valid drive’s license and be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited secondary, college level or trade school.
Requirements: Create a 25 or 55 second video to show teens how to be safe drivers.

$10,000 Clothes Recycling Scholarship
Sponsor: Do Something
Amount: $10,000
Deadline: June 20, 2014
Eligibility: Open only to (1) U.S. or Canadian citizens regardless of residency or (2) persons who reside in the 50 United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or Canada (excluding Quebec), regardless of citizenship, each who are younger than 26 years old.
Requirements: Collect a lot of old clothes, return to H&M drop-off locations and take a photo.
