Many students and their parents worry about the cost of a college education. College is a huge investment, and the cost of attendance across the country continues to go up. One way to start lowering the cost of a college education is to look for and apply for scholarships.

There are thousands of scholarships out there. Some are large scholarships that are well publicized, while others are lesser known. My goal is to share some lesser-known scholarships with my readers every Saturday. Check back every Saturday for more scholarships.

Here are your scholarships for Saturday, May 24, 2014.

A Voice for Animals Contest
Sponsor: Humane Education Network
Amount: Up to $750 (multiple prizes)
Deadline: May 25, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be between the ages of 14-18 years of age and attending high school or be home-schooled. The contest is open to ALL otherwise eligible students worldwide.
Requirements: There are many different ways to enter, including writing an essay See scholarship website for specific details.

B. Davis Scholarship
Sponsor: Student Award Search Aid
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: May 26, 2014
Eligibility: Open to current high school juniors and seniors as well as students registered in any post-secondary institution.
Requirements: To apply for the scholarship, students will need to write an essay of less than 1,000 words about a “controversial problem on high school or college/university campuses and suggest a solution.”

“Design-A-Sign” Scholarship Contest

Amount: 1st Prize – $1,000; 2nd Prize – $200; 3rd Prize – $100
Deadline: May 29, 2014
Eligibility: Open to students at least 13 years of age. The contest is only open to the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. All winners must be able to provide proof of high school, university, college or trade school enrollment.
Requirements: Design a banner “that expresses your future dreams and goals you hope to achieve through higher education.”

Online Games Scholarship
Sponsor: Big Fish Games
Amount: $2,500
Deadline: May 31, 2014
Eligibility: Open only to college-bound graduating high school seniors and students currently enrolled in college (U.S. students only).
Requirements: Submit essay with at least 500 words responding to the following questions: “What are the biggest challenges in the mobile games industry today? And how do you see those challenges evolving in the future?”

$1,000 Cappex No Essay College Money Scholarship

Amount: $1,000
Deadline: May 31, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be enrolled at an accredited college or university located in the United States. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must create a Cappex account.
Requirements: Create a Cappex profile (if you don’t already have one) and provide information about your extracurricular, leadership and volunteer activities.

$2,000 No Essay Scholarship

Amount: $2,000
Deadline: May 31, 2014
Eligibility: Open to all high school, college, and graduate students and those planning to enroll within 12 months. Applicant must be a legal resident of the United States. International students with valid visas are also eligible.
Requirements: Create a College Prowler account (if you don’t already have one) and provide very general information.

Fifth Month Scholarship

Deadline: May 31, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be 13 years of age or older, a legal resident of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia and be currently enrolled (or enroll no later than the fall of 2020) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education.

Principles Scholarship Essay

Eligibility: Students must be a graduating high school senior or a freshman or sophomore in college and must not be related to any Free Country staff or extended family.
Requirements: In about 400-500 words, tell them about a principle you live by.

Eligibility: No specific requires are listed on the website.
Requirements: Provide a business proposal plan for an online business startup that would challenge the like o Google and Facebook.

Help Desk Software Scholarship

Eligibility: No specific requires are listed on the website.
Requirements: In 600 words or less, answer a few questions they provide.

Copyright Awareness Scholarship
Sponsor: Music Publishers Association of the United States
Amount: Up to $5,000
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: Legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia or currently studying in one of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia pursuant to a valid F-1 Student Visa who are between 13 and 25 years of age at the time of application and who are currently enrolled in an accredited secondary school or post-secondary institution of higher learning.
Requirements: Fill out an application and create a video that is three minutes or less telling them why copyright is important.

CEO of Tomorrow Scholarship (Scholarship no longer available on website)

Amount: $2,500
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: Open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 years of age or older at the time of submission and who are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university or who will be enrolled by August 1, 2014.
Requirements: Take a short survey and submit a 500-600 word essay on “What Makes An Ideal Employer.”

National Pathfinder Scholarship
Sponsor: National Federation of Republican Women
Amount: Three (3) $2,500 Scholarships
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: Undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as students enrolled in a master’s degree program. Must be female.
Requirements: Five page Pathfinder Application.

Betty Rendel Scholarship
Sponsor: National Federation of Republican Women
Amount: Three (3) $1,000 Scholarships
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: Female undergraduates who are majoring in political science, government or economics and have successfully completed at least two years of college coursework.
Requirements: Five page Rendel Application.

Berrien Fragos Thorn Arts Scholarship for Migrant Farmworkers
Sponsor: Geneseo Migrant Center
Amount: Up to $2,500
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be at least 16 years of age, currently enrolled in school, a letter of recommendation and history of movement to obtain work in agriculture.
Requirements: Completed application, budget or documentation of expenses showing what scholarship will be used for (workshops, materials, etc.) and a portfolio of samples of work.

180 Medical College Scholarships
Sponsor: 180 Medical
Amount: Five (5) $1,000 Scholarships
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: Students attending a two-year, four-year, or graduate school program full time in the fall. Applicants must be under a physician’s care for a spinal cord injury, spina bifida, transverse myelitis, or neurogenic bladder.
Requirements: Submit application.

Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship
Sponsor: Animation Career Review
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: June 1, 2014
Eligibility: High School seniors in the US pursuing an animation related degree program at an accredited post-secondary school or college.
Requirements: Submit application and 500-1,000 word essay answering, “What specific skills do you most want to develop?”

Got A Spine Scholarship

Amount: $500
Deadline: June 2, 2014
Eligibility: Students must be attending college or university no later than October of 2014, enrolled full-time, achieved a GPA of 2.5 of greater during their last academic year, be a U.S. or Canadian resident, and attending a school in the U.S. or Canada
Requirements: Submit application and answer a few essay questions.

I’m First Scholarship
Sponsor: Center for Student Opportunities
Amount: $4,000 Scholarships ($1,000 per year, renewable for four years of college) awarded to eight students.
Deadline: May 23, 2014 Deadline extended to June 2, 2014
Eligibility: Current high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States. Student must be first-generation college student (neither parent has earned a four-year college degree) and must be attending an I’m First partner college or university.
Requirements: Applicants will need to fill out an application, answer a few questions in 300 words or less, provide a sample blog post and provide one letter of recommendation.

CBC Spouses Education Scholarship
Sponsor: Congressional Black Caucus Foundation
Amount: Varies
Deadline: June 5, 2014
Eligibility: Be a full-time undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking student at an accredited college or university or a current high school senior preparing to become a full-time undergraduate student. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and exhibit leadership ability and particulate in community service activities. Preference will be given to students living in or attending a school in a Congressional Black Caucus member district.
Requirements: Completed application form, personal statement, two letters of recommendation, copy of detailed Federal Student Aid Report (SAR), resume and recent photograph.
