You may have noticed that I have not been posting very much lately. I apologize for being missing in action. I can finally announce why I have been away so much: I’m moving.
Since attending the NACAC Conference in late September, I have known it was a possibility. However, it became a reality in late October. My husband has accepted a new job and we will be moving to Austin, Texas.
One of the biggest questions people have asked me about this move is what it means for JLV College Counseling? The simple answer is that I am not sure. I absolutely love helping students and parents with the college admissions process. It really is my passion. But, I don’t think the educational consultant path is for me. My passion really lies with working with low-income and/or first generation students and these are not the students who typically work with educational consultants. Therefore, I may look into working with a community-based organization or a non-profit that works with this population. But again, I’m not sure.
I WILL continue with my scholarship lists. I have loved hearing from students and parents that they learned of scholarships they won on my website! Plus, I know that many students have come to use my website as a major resource for scholarships. I love this and I will continue!
I WILL get back on track and start writing more. I love providing free advice about college admissions. I do it all the time and want to keep doing so. However, getting back into the grove of writing probably won’t start until the start of the new year when we settle in Texas. We’re currently preparing for the move, including selling our home, finding a new place in Texas, and much more.
Again, I apologize for not posting very much lately. There are big changes happening right now family and I. I will keep you updated about our transition and the future of JLV College Counseling.
Thanks in advance for understanding!
Best wishes on your upcoming move! I have enjoyed (and hope to continue doing so) passing along some of the info you post to some of my teen refugee friends here in Charlotte, NC. I would love to see more refugee teens going to college (not just community college) — and recommend that you look further into that when you get to Austin; Texas has been one of the largest refugee resettlement states in our country. I think you would find it extremely fulfilling to help kids like this — who were likely born in a refugee camp or in situations of extreme persecution for their families — find their way to college to help improve their lives and the lives of their families. They WANT to succeed! Thanks for all the research you do!
That is another great population to consider! Thank you for giving me that idea. You’re right – so many of those students want to succeed and need someone to help them, as well as advocate for them.
You have been such a blessing to me! Praying for you and your husband and hoping God will use your gifts to encourage and educate many young people. Thank you for your site! It is an invaluable resource!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words! And thank you for the prayer – one of the biggest thing we are praying for right now is that our home will sell so that we can have a smoother transition 🙂 Thank you!
Jessica! I am in Austin all the time for work and can connect you to friends there including one who moved there not long ago who spent 8 years @ Princeton Review and – like you – works to make the world a better place. Write to me on shamraye@yahoo.com. Thx for all you do to help us!
Jessica, I live near Austin in Lago Vista Texas! It is a great escape from the big city, in the hills, near the lake and is just a beautiful small town! We have lots of volunteer organizations too! I am the local Leo Club advisor (the teenage version of the Lion Club) and would love to tell you all about it! We are the #1 Leo club in the state of Texas due to all of the activities we do! I know several of our teens use your Scholarship Saturday faithfully (including my own daugher). I pray your move will be smooth sailing and welcome to Texas!
Thanks for the great work and mission you are doing. You have touched so many lives. Once settled in the new year, I will reach out to you during 2016 as so many children from my city (St. Petersburg, Florida) need the information you kindly provide. We need more warriors like you.
Thank you so very much! It really touches me to read things like this! I will continue posting scholarship lists during the transition, so please feel free to keep watching your email for the list notifications 🙂
Best wishes with your move! You are a blessing to students. I am looking forward to meeting with you in the future, and seeing that I’m in Texas too, I just betcha (Texas word) that I’ll see you at a conference. Feel free to contact me anytime.
Linda Hart
Yes, Linda, we’ll probably run into each other in the future. I’ve already looked at the TACAC conference dates 🙂
Jessica, congratulations on your husband’s new job and the move that it comes with. I absolutely love, and look forward, to the information that you share from the articles to Scholarship Saturday. i work with AVID 11 and 12 students; AVID 12 students check in their Scholarship Module on Canvas every Monday to see what Scholarship Saturday information is waiting for them. In addition, I share the articles with the students and their parents.
When I read that you want to work with low-income, first-generation students, you should definitely look into AVID; it ticks all of your boxes. Like you I have a passion to see that students be successful in post-secondary and have found that AVID is a perfect fit.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge because you help my students and I more than you will ever know.
AVID is a great program. When I was on the college side, I loved doing programs for the AVID students at the schools in my territory.
Good luck and thank you.
Thank you!
Hi Jessica, I can understand your passion of helping first-gen lower income students as I do as well. Recently finding your site I have used your scholarship listing in addition to the research I do, which also includes internships. I wish you all the best in your transitions, and in selling your house!
Thank you so much!
Hope things turn out in your new city. If you could come out with a scholarship list once every two months that would be great. Your scholarship list is one of the best resources that I have come across on the internet. Good Luck!
I think I will continue doing all of the scholarships I have been posting (Scholarship Saturday and the monthly scholarship lists). I love putting them together for students.
Thank you for providing this information. It has greatly helped my son and I in our scholarship search. He will be a first generation college attendee.
Good luck in your family’s relocation. I look forward to seeing more in the new year.
Thank you so much!
All the best to you on your move. Change is good!

I agree – change is good. Thank you!
Just a word – do not speed through Kyle TX late in the evening or early morning – Officer Friendly [my son] pulls the IH35 patrol through Kyle most of the time and loves to talk to those who speed through his territory.

Great tip! Luckily I’m not much of a speeder any more. One travel season as an admissions officer saw me get two speeding tickets. After that, I vowed to follow the speed limit 🙂
Thank you so much Jessica for taking the time to post all the scholarship information. Good luck on your relocation to Texas.
Thank you!
Thank you for taking time to share your guidance and knowledge with everyone. God bless your family through your move. What an amazing path to help others.
Thank you so much.
Hi Jessica, You have been a great blessing for all of our students and parents in Oakland and additional surrounding areas. Please stay in touch and praying for you and your family always….
Wanda Tucker
Thank you so much! I plan to continue posting the scholarship lists and more helpful articles in the future.
Congratulations to you and your husband! I have enjoyed reading your emails and have shared them with my students. You have been a great resource and I wish you well. Please to the extent that you can continue to share scholarships and college access information. Many of my students are low-income as well as first generation college students.

Thank you! I plan to continue the scholarship lists regularly. And, helpful articles for the admissions and scholarships process will be coming in the future 🙂
Our high school has just begun trying to help our college-bound students, especially low-income and first-generation. I would love to see you blog about resources for these areas.
