JLV College CounselingYou may have noticed that I have not been posting very much lately. I apologize for being missing in action. I can finally announce why I have been away so much: I’m moving.
Since attending the NACAC Conference in late September, I have known it was a possibility. However, it became a reality in late October. My husband has accepted a new job and we will be moving to Austin, Texas.
One of the biggest questions people have asked me about this move is what it means for JLV College Counseling? The simple answer is that I am not sure. I absolutely love helping students and parents with the college admissions process. It really is my passion. But, I don’t think the educational consultant path is for me. My passion really lies with working with low-income and/or first generation students and these are not the students who typically work with educational consultants. Therefore, I may look into working with a community-based organization or a non-profit that works with this population. But again, I’m not sure.
I WILL continue with my scholarship lists. I have loved hearing from students and parents that they learned of scholarships they won on my website! Plus, I know that many students have come to use my website as a major resource for scholarships. I love this and I will continue!
I WILL get back on track and start writing more. I love providing free advice about college admissions. I do it all the time and want to keep doing so. However, getting back into the grove of writing probably won’t start until the start of the new year when we settle in Texas. We’re currently preparing for the move, including selling our home, finding a new place in Texas, and much more.
Again, I apologize for not posting very much lately. There are big changes happening right now family and I. I will keep you updated about our transition and the future of JLV College Counseling.

Best wishes on your upcoming move! I have enjoyed (and hope to continue doing so) passing along some of the info you post to some of my teen refugee friends here in Charlotte, NC. I would love to see more refugee teens going to college (not just community college) — and recommend that you look further into that when you get to Austin; Texas has been one of the largest refugee resettlement states in our country. I think you would find it extremely fulfilling to help kids like this — who were likely born in a refugee camp or in situations of extreme persecution for their families — find their way to college to help improve their lives and the lives of their families. They WANT to succeed! Thanks for all the research you do!
That is another great population to consider! Thank you for giving me that idea. You’re right – so many of those students want to succeed and need someone to help them, as well as advocate for them.

Jessica, I live near Austin in Lago Vista Texas! It is a great escape from the big city, in the hills, near the lake and is just a beautiful small town! We have lots of volunteer organizations too! I am the local Leo Club advisor (the teenage version of the Lion Club) and would love to tell you all about it! We are the #1 Leo club in the state of Texas due to all of the activities we do! I know several of our teens use your Scholarship Saturday faithfully (including my own daugher). I pray your move will be smooth sailing and welcome to Texas!

Jessica, congratulations on your husband’s new job and the move that it comes with. I absolutely love, and look forward, to the information that you share from the articles to Scholarship Saturday. i work with AVID 11 and 12 students; AVID 12 students check in their Scholarship Module on Canvas every Monday to see what Scholarship Saturday information is waiting for them. In addition, I share the articles with the students and their parents.
When I read that you want to work with low-income, first-generation students, you should definitely look into AVID; it ticks all of your boxes. Like you I have a passion to see that students be successful in post-secondary and have found that AVID is a perfect fit.

AVID is a great program. When I was on the college side, I loved doing programs for the AVID students at the schools in my territory.

I think I will continue doing all of the scholarships I have been posting (Scholarship Saturday and the monthly scholarship lists). I love putting them together for students.

Just a word – do not speed through Kyle TX late in the evening or early morning – Officer Friendly [my son] pulls the IH35 patrol through Kyle most of the time and loves to talk to those who speed through his territory.

Great tip! Luckily I’m not much of a speeder any more. One travel season as an admissions officer saw me get two speeding tickets. After that, I vowed to follow the speed limit 🙂
