If you have read any of my posts, you will know I encourage students to dig deep when they research colleges. So many students choose colleges based on the name and prestigious of colleges without knowing much else. However, much more needs to go into choosing a college, including finding the best fit for you.

The late Loren Pope, who was the New York Times education editor and journalist, wrote a booked titled Colleges That Changes Lives in 1996. As someone dedicated to students, Pope traveled throughout the country and visited many colleges. Per the CTCL website, “after much research, Mr. Pope began championing a small group of less well-known colleges for their life-changing success with students, and soon after the organization of Colleges That Change Lives came into being.” His book and the CTCL organization is a list of the “40 Schools That Will Change The Way You Think About College.”

The Colleges That Change Lives now hosts college fairs highlighting the 40 colleges. This special college fair is coming to California on the following dates:

July 28, 2014
Santa Clara, California

July 29, 2014
San Rafael, California

July 30 & 31, 2014
Los Angeles, California

August 28, 2014
San Diego, California

If one of the CTCL college fairs is near you, I encourage you to attend. The fair will give you the opportunity to learn about the wonderful opportunities that small colleges can provide that bigger name schools might not. You might even find a college that is a good fit for you. However, if you do not find your college, you will still leave with a greater appreciation for smaller colleges.

As with all college fair, I encourage you to prepare before the fair. Learn a little about each college attending and come with a list of questions you will ask the college representatives. Being prepared will make the fair less stressful and so much more productive.
